“There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.”
Luke 1:5-7 (NKJV)
“But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.”
Luke 1:13 (NKJV)
A number of years ago we had signed a contract on a house which we had our hearts set on and were confident it was the right house for us at the time.
The only problem was it was subject to selling the house we were living in - and that house didn’t sell for what seemed a long time. This resulted in the contract expiring but we were still sure it was the right house.
While our house was still on the market I kept checking that the prospective purchase was still for sale - it was! My prayers at the time I must admit were something along the lines of …’Lord can you please hurry up so we can buy the house’.
Long story short - Our house sold and we were able to renegotiate the contract with the agent and purchased the new house at a much reduced price.
The point? Had my prayer been answered the way and when I wanted, we would have paid a higher price. As it turned out the new house was a real blessing for a number of years after that.
There are times it is probably a good thing God hasn’t answered our prayer the way we wanted.
Zacharias and Elizabeth went through some painful years of what looked like unanswered prayer, however in the perfect timing of God, John the Baptist was born. John would consequently be the one who would prepare the way for Jesus’ public ministry.
Not only was Zacharias and Elizabeth’s prayer answered, but it was a notable miracle considering their ages.
You may be waiting on an answer to prayer and it may seem like it has been a long time coming, but be assured God hears you and will work all things together for your good.
Keep believing and trusting for ‘…No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly.’ (Psalm 84:11 NKJV)
