'And He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."'
Acts 1:7-8 (NKJV)
It can be incredibly frustrating when you are about to do a DIY job with a cordless drill, only to find out that the battery has run out of charge and the ‘spare’ was not recharged either.
Cordless power tools can be very convenient in many ways but NOT when they go flat. However, a corded tool when plugged into a power point will have a continuous power source available.
I wonder how often we tend to function like the cordless drill, relying on an occasional charge or even our own ability to get things done remotely - i.e. without God.
Jesus promised that we would receive power from on high and the power available to us is unlimited and reliable - but we need to be ‘plugged in’ to make the most of it.
Jesus used the analogy of the vine and the branches to illustrate the fact that our spiritual life source comes from being vitally and continuously connected to the vine.
At the end of the day our ‘power supply’ and life itself only comes from relationship with our Heavenly Father, but true relationship involves more than just a one off decision for Christ which we rely on for salvation.
The Apostle Paul writes this: “And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord...”(Ephesians 5:18-19 NKJV)
The phrase ‘be filled with’ is written in the present continuous tense which simply means to be filled and go on being filled - in other words this is a daily necessity.
No marriage survives on an occasional catchup with our spouse but thrives on day to day intimacy and communication - so too our relationship with Jesus.
Can I encourage you, don’t rely on an occasional ‘charge’, but stay intentionally connected daily.
