“And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.”
Joel 2:28 (NIV)
At home, we have a cordless vacuum. When we use it, we take it off the charger and vacuum the house. There is one problem though: it only does 90% of our house before it runs out of charge. It just doesn’t hold enough power charge to finish the house. Tamiya and I have two different solutions to this problem. TAMIYA still does a quality clean. She still moves chairs and rugs. She does every corner of every room…. And puts it back on the charger when it runs out…. And then returns to finish the job a little later once it’s recharged. It takes longer and isn’t the way she would prefer, but it results in a quality clean. PHIL vacuums as fast as possible. My goal is is to smash out the job before the charge runs out. I don't move chairs. I don't move rugs. I skip corners of rooms - and maybe even whole rooms if I don’t think it looks too bad. And I walk away victorious that I beat the battery challenge. The problem is that the clean is substandard (just ask Tamiya) and has to be redone again sooner. You were designed by God to operate with HIS power (Joel 2). He promises to anoint and empower every person who would receive it. He wants to give power to you in order to do life well: relationships, career, inner-thinking, following Jesus, sharing your faith, problem solving, financial management, integrity…. all only possible when you are filled with His spiritual power. When you try to live life WITHOUT His power, life results in substandard living (like my rushed, compromised cleaning). - You relate to people using YOUR toolkit, rather than the fruits of the Spirit (love, peace patience, gentleness, etc). - You manage finance using YOUR education and emotion, rather than Kingdom principles. - You evangelise using YOUR ability (force, manipulation, pressure), rather than gentle grace. - Your identity is shaped by others, not the Word of God. The list goes on. The results of living a spirit-led and spirit-fuelled life will NEVER be what we expect. It will take an unexpected course. It will not follow the timeframe we hope for. It will be take you to places you would have otherwise avoided. However, it will be the best life possible. That’s why worship, prayer, praying in the Holy Spirit, being in anointed atmospheres, and reading the Word of God are ESSENTIAL to Christian living. Like Tamiya stopping to plug in the vacuum to ensure a quality clean, these behaviours are the STOP and RECHARGE that allows quality living. The Word teaches us that His Spirit is available for EVERYONE - “I will pour out my Spirit on all people.” Stop. Get filled with His Spirit to fully charge before heading out into life. If you are drained, be REFILLED. If you have lived in your own strength, ask God to help you return to spiritual living.
