“Now prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me. "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone...”
Job 38:3-6 (NKJV)
The book of Job gives us the account of a man who had his life totally turned upside down.
He lost family and property and suffered physical anguish as well. He struggled to make sense of it all in his grief.
In fact things got so bad that his wife said ‘Curse God and die’ - not the sort of wifely ‘encouragement’ that he needed at the time.
If you read through the book you will find that Job asked questions of God, trying to make sense of everything that was happening - however he did not sin against God with his lips (Job 2:10).
For a long time it seemed there was no answer from heaven, but in chapter 38 God speaks, and instead of answering Job’s questions he asks Job a series of 66 questions beginning with the one we just read.
In all of God’s questions He begins to reveal to Job the awesomeness of who He is when circumstances make no sense to us.
He was drawing Job’s attention to the magnificence of creation and the power of the Creator behind the creation.
It’s almost as if He is saying - ‘If I can do that, don’t you think I am bigger than all of this other stuff you are facing?’.
There have been a number of times when I have listened to the roar of waves crashing 1.5 kms from our house and it has sounded like the shoreline could be at our front door - such is the power of the waves.
In those moments I often think of the words of the old hymn -
‘O Lord my God,
when I in awesome wonder,
consider all the works
Thy hand hath made
Then sings my soul…….How great Thou art’.
In these times in which we are living you may well be asking God what is going on, and it may just be that He comes back to you with a question similar to what He asked Job.
At the end of the book Job has this revelation -
"I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear,
But now my eye sees You." (Job 42:5 NKJV)
May we all have that same revelation of how great our God is - He has got this!
