Peace - Rachel Weston

“But the Father will send the Friend in my name to help you.  The Friend is the Holy Spirit. He will teach you all things.  He will remind you of everything I have said to you.  I leave my peace with you.  I give my peace to you.  I do not give it to you as the world does.  Do not let your hearts be troubled.  And do not be afraid.”

John 14:26-27 (NIRV)

I have been asked to make my brother’s wedding cake in a few weeks and I am having second thoughts at saying yes, as my trial cake’s butter cream was a lot more yellow than white.  So I did what all good people would do in this day and age… I asked my Facebook group… Mums Who Bake and Cook!  There is always lots of advice on this page, but the one that made me laugh was when they said add a tiny bit of purple food colouring to the butter cream and it will go white!  What!  But under further investigation and my second trusted source of information… Google… they were right!  It went against my grain to add something so opposite to what I was trying to achieve. This is what Jesus tells us in John when he shows us the way to have peace.  He tells us that He will give us a Friend, the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit will teach us, remind us of what God has said and give us peace.  However, He makes it clear, He is not giving us peace as the world gives us peace.  You see, the world encourages us to get peace by emptying our lives, avoiding conflict, not doing anything that is hard or uncomfortable, emptying our mind of concerns, etc., but Jesus tells us to fill our lives.  Fill ourselves with the power of the Holy Spirit.  He comes with words of wisdom to speak into conflict, He comes with power to be courageous, He comes with peace that passes understanding.  This peace is not found by emptying our lives, but filling it with Him. Think today what is taking up the most part of your life – is it peace or worry?  If it is worry, ask Jesus to fill you today with the Holy Spirit, a friend, a comforter, bringing power and peace into your life.  If you have peace, do you have peace from emptying your life, or filling it with the power of the Holy Spirit.  I encourage you… the latter will last, the latter will give you courage to face whatever today brings to you and still give you peace. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”  (Galatians 5:22-23a NIV)
