“Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.”
2 Corinthians 4:16 (NKJV)
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)
After my father-in-law passed away we kept some of his things as keepsakes including an old garden bench. The bench is a wrought iron and slat bench which was in a state of disrepair so we are in the process of restoring it. The process has involved stripping back the old paint and dealing with the rust that has appeared over the years and replacing the slats. At the end of the process it should look like new again but in reality it will still be the old bench that has had a facelift - a pretty good one I hope! When Jesus comes into our lives the Bible tells us that we are ‘born again’ and that we are ‘new creations’. What that means for all of us is that Jesus doesn't just come into our lives to do a ‘restoration job’ where He patches us up and gives us a makeover. Instead through the power of the Holy Spirit something brand new is created. The moment I committed my life to Christ something miraculous took place within my spirit and I have never been the same person since. Yes my body still looks the same - just older - and yes it complains from time to time - and yes I am still a work in process in my thinking and emotions, HOWEVER, my motivation for living and my ability to live the Christian life now comes from the Holy Spirit who lives within me. Now I am fundamentally different on the inside - a brand new man. Do we fully understand and comprehend how this all works? Probably not! Paul recognised the challenge of still living in an ageing body and was also honest about the challenges he had in his thought life (Romans 7), yet as the brand new creation God had made him to be, he passionately pursued Jesus and Kingdom purpose. We tend to lose heart when we focus on the wrong things, yet Paul encourages us to focus on the fact that we are ‘brand new’ creations. We are NOT the same people we once were, and be assured the Holy Spirit is continually keeping us renewed day by day as we look to Him.
