“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
1 John 3:1 (NIV)
My eldest son Jarrah is now 3 and a half and is very keen to follow me around. When I am doing jobs in the backyard, he is wanting to be right there with me; whether digging in the garden, shifting rocks or weeding, he is a keen helper. Now I don’t always need his help, and quite frankly sometimes his help is a hindrance, but I love the fact he wants to help. He wants to mimic what I do. I love the special moments we share because he wants to be like me, or help me, it’s certainly a proud dad moment. No matter what your relationship with your earthly father is like, we have an amazing Heavenly Father. “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1 NIV) How great is this verse; we are children of God, not because of what we’ve done, but because of His great love for us. God has called us into this father/son or father/daughter relationship with Him. He wants us to live as his sons and daughters, in loving relationship with Him. I can only imagine, that just like I feel proud when my son Jarrah wants to replicate me or help me, God our Heavenly Father would feel the same sense of pride when His children want to live like him. Our life is to then be a response of this ‘great love’. As we try to live like Jesus and replicate our Father in heaven, we reflect him to all those around us. As we choose love, forgiveness, kindness and to be generous to others, we are sharing our Father’s love to those around us. When we do these things, we are partnering with and helping God our Father to expand His kingdom. Even though he doesn’t need us, he allows us this wonderful privilege. So today look for ways to live as a child of God and to partner with our Heavenly Father to share his ‘great love’ with those around you.
