“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”
Psalm 139:7-10 (NIV)
I recently followed the instructions of our Prime Minster, Scott Morrison, and downloaded the COVIDSafe App onto my iPhone. So far, millions of us have installed the app to “keep Australia safe.” The premise of the app being that if we come into contact with a person who tests positive, the app will detect our contact and we will be notified. I often receive a notification on my phone to remind me that the app is always active and working. This invisible tracker, working silently in the background as I go about my day doing groceries, heading to work and as I exercise, is a brilliant invention. I feel as though I have a magic bubble following me everywhere I go. The first few times I saw the notification pop up on my screen, it served as a good reminder that the app was working. Otherwise I probably would have forgotten that I even installed it in the first place. I wonder how often we forget about God’s protection and presence as we go about our day to day life. Are we aware that God’s presence is with us as we come and go, just like the app? As we do our groceries, pick up the kids, run errands and work, God is always with us. As we come into contact with others, God is with us. His Spirit living inside us is our ever-present guide, help, strong tower, shield, defence, provider and safe place. God is where His people are. I have really enjoyed church online each week and I have felt incredibly proud of our teams who have spent hours labouring to make it happen. What a blessing this has been! One thing that I’ve been considering is the idea that God doesn’t need us all to be gathered in a building for his Spirit to move. He can meet with us through church online and is present with us while we sit and sip coffee on our lounges. For some, I’m sure the picture of watching church online may not be so serene, where perhaps the kids may be crashing around the lounge room. Guess what? God can also meet you there, amongst the noise and the mess. How amazing it is that God doesn’t need us to clean ourselves or our dwellings up for him to arrive. He literally meets us right where we are. We simply need to invite Him into our lives, dwell with Him there, and to sometimes be reminded of His eternal presence. God will never leave or forsake us. Never! As you go about your day today, send yourself a notification: God is with me.
