God directs our steps - Ps Graeme Leske

3rd October 2020

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way.   Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the Lord upholds him with His hand.  I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread.”

Psalm 37:23-25 (NKJV)

This last week Chris and I were in the Barossa for a few days. One evening Chris began to experience flashes of light in one eye which was rather disconcerting.  This can be an indication of a problem with the retina. A local optometrist checked the eye and it appeared to be OK but the following morning she woke with not just the flashes but a ‘cobwebbing’ effect in the same eye - not a good sign. As I was already booked in to see a laser specialist in Adelaide we rang to see if we could swap and have Chris take my appointment instead.  We had a couple of attempts at this and they were not able to change the appointment or fit her in. As it ‘happened’, our daughter works for an ophthalmologist near the Barossa and even though he was not consulting that day, he was willing to see Chris and repaired what was a torn retina.  Left unchecked it could have resulted in serious damage to the eyesight. Why do I tell you this?  The laser specialist we initially wanted to see would have been the wrong option.  He just ‘happened’ to refuse the appointment. We just ‘happened' to be in the Barossa close to an ophthalmologist who just ‘happened’ to be in his clinic that morning and ‘happened’ to be willing to see Chris.  Within a couple of hours the eye had been repaired and Chris just looked like a pirate for the next 24 hours. Many people in the world talk of coincidences and even refer to ‘luck’ playing a role in their circumstances.  However, I firmly believe our steps as Christians are directed by God and He does watch over us, even at times shutting the doors we should not go through. In Acts 16 we find that Paul tried to go to Asia and then attempted to go to Bithynia but was blocked each time, and then he ‘happened’ to end up in a Macedonian prison.  It was there that a jailer and his whole family were saved. God does direct our steps, and even the closed door can be his direction, but know this - He will provide everything you need for the journey ahead of you, so keep trusting.  There are no coincidences in God!
