“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (NIV)
“Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!”
2 Corinthians 9:15 (NIV)
The other day we went shopping and as part of our trip we decided to buy my 3-year-old son Jarrah a small LEGO set. On the way home from the shops Jarrah was in the car holding the LEGO set in his hands and was saying to us, ‘’This belongs to me, I own it’’.
This really struck me. He had come to the conclusion that because we had given it to him, it was now his property even though he didn’t pay for it. We explained to him that Mummy and Daddy had bought it and paid the money, but because we had given it to him, yes, he now owned it; it was now his.
It was through the buying and giving of the gift and him receiving it that he now ‘owned it’. We had handed over full ownership to him. We didn’t give the gift with the condition that we would take it back. Whenever a gift is given, ownership has been transferred.
This is the same with Jesus. Jesus through his death on the cross has given us the ultimate gift; the gift of salvation (forgiveness and eternal life). Jesus paid the price for the gift with his life. All we have to do to have ‘ownership’ of our salvation, believe in Jesus and receive His gift. It is now ours.
Let’s be encouraged to live each day knowing what a wonderful gift we have received.
