“They had prepared a supper for Jesus. Martha served, and Lazarus and Mary were among those at the table. Mary picked up an alabaster jar filled with nearly a liter of extremely rare and costly perfume—the purest extract of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet. Then she wiped them dry with her long hair. And the fragrance of the costly oil filled the house.”
John 12:2-3 (TPT)
There’s a lot to be said about the power of smell. Certain fragrances have the ability to evoke many emotions and memories from our past. For me, I have a distinct memory of the smell of my grandmother. I remember spending many moments in her house and there was just something about the way she smelled. Her perfume was a mix of flowery smells, a bit like potpourri and it was always very, very strong. I remember feeling like that smell was stuck on me for days after she’d given me a hug as a child, but I remember that fragrance gave me great comfort. In this Bible verse we see Mary pour expensive perfume on Jesus’ feet as a way of honouring him and it says that this smell and fragrance filled the house they were in. I’d imagine that this perfume fragrance would have stayed on Jesus’ skin and clothes for many days, as well as Mary’s. I can imagine them walking around after this moment and there being a distinct fragrance about them, perhaps one that turned heads. This week we celebrate the 40th anniversary of our church and the legacy that we have inherited from those before us while looking forward with hope and expectation for all that lies ahead of us. There’s a fragrance about our church and a fragrance about our lives. As a church and as individuals we have the power to choose the fragrance that is left behind by our lives and the moments we make with the people in our world every day. Just like Mary who chose to honour Jesus and release a fragrance that was noticed by others, may our lives do the same. May the fragrance of our lives be one that brings faith, hope, comfort, joy and life to all that we come across, and may it be a fragrance that lingers long after our time is done. Make the fragrance of your life memorable.
