“The Shulamite: I am a rose of Sharon, a lily found in one of the valleys. The Beloved: Like a lily among thorns, that is what she is; my dear is a captivating beauty among the young women. The Shulamite: My love is like an apple tree in a wooded forest; he is a ripe tree among a grove of saplings, those young men. I sat beneath his ample shade, filled with such joy. I tasted the sweetness of his fruit and longed for more. He placed me at his banquet table, for everyone to see that his banner over me declares his love.”
Song of Solomon 2:1-4 (VOICE)
Song of Solomon is a beautifully descriptive book that is truly a love story about Jesus and us, and reading it with this in mind shows us the depth of love that our Lord has for His people. We find that the Beloved and the Shulamite speak in poetry and metaphors using flowers and fragrance to describe their love for each other. For many years I studied and worked in the field of Commercial Floristry. It was a wonderful profession to be in. I was surrounded by beauty and fragrance and I had the privilege to work with God’s creation. The Lily of the Valley is actually a very unassuming looking flower. It is small and dainty and yet its fragrance is sweet and beautiful, and many famous perfumers use this flower’s notes in their perfumes. It also has many medicinal qualities and it is through the crushing process that the oil is obtained.
What is amazing about these few verses is that in the beginning the Shulamite sees herself as insignificant, and yet the Bridegroom makes her feel loved, despite her own insecurities. He speaks words of affirmation over her and we see that she understands the great depth of His overarching love. It really is quite amazing that the Lord is continually speaking words of affirmation over us and yet how easy it is for us to get caught in our insecurities. When we get the revelation of just how much He loves and adores us we change and see everything differently.
